Disaster Preparedness 101

Disaster Preparedness 101

It seems after all of these storms lately that now is the best time to talk about disaster preparedness. Know what disasters your area is prone to, and always be prepared for them.

Our hope is that we can offer some tips and insight to help you prepare for a disaster.

Here are some things to keep in mind before a disaster:

  1. Stay updated. It’s simple: pay attention to whatever disaster is coming your way. Knowing as much as you can about a disaster is the best way to plan for it.
  2. Protect your valuables. If you don’t already have a disaster-proof box or safe to store all your valuables in, it’s time to invest in one. If a disaster is imminent, take it with you wherever you take shelter.
  3. Build a basic survival kit. This requires lots of research and reflection; what things do you know you’ll need to survive that others may not need? Here are 8 things you’ve probably forgotten to pack.
  4. Have a plan for alternative ways to cook. Should you lose power, you still need to eat -- and why not eat well? Have a BBQ grill or camp stove around (with plenty of fuel), learn to cook over an open fire, and/or create a stove in a can. Here’s an awesome video on how to make a simple penny stove out of a beer can.

  5. Don’t forget about hygiene. If you lose power and water during a disaster, you never know how long it will be before you get it back. So take proper precautions to ensure you can stay clean. This means packing hygiene items like soap and toothpaste, and creating an alternate way to use the bathroom.
  6. Consider outdoor temperatures. If it’s cold outside, make sure you have plenty of insulation and heat (including firepits, wood-burning stoves, etc.). If it’s hot outside, find ways to conserve energy and keep from getting too hot. Battery-operated fans, generators for a/c, and plenty of cold water can help.
Remember: be ready for anything. When it comes to preparing for the unknown, there are so many factors to consider that it can often be overwhelming. Once you’ve prepared as much as you can for a disaster situation, check out the biggest survival mistakes you need to make sure you don’t make.

Our hearts go out to those that have been affected by recent storms, and we can only hope that some of our products and tips have helped you and your family stay safe.
