BattlBox Black: Is It Worth It?

BattlBox Black: Is It Worth It?

Battlbox Black has experienced quite the buzz surrounding it lately, and I recently had a chance to sit down with Patrick Kelley, BattlBox’s Chief Operating Officer, and product lead on the new BattlBox Black.

About BattlBox Black.

BattlBox Black is the newest offering from BattlBox. It features the most high-end gear every quarter. BattlBox Black costs $699 (no, that’s not a typo), but if you are an experienced outdoorsman or survivalist who values premium gear, the box is very much worth it. Only top, name-brand items will be included in these boxes, such as Benchmade, Casio, Southern Grind, BioLite, SureFire, Bushnell, and so much more! Each box is limited to a select, exclusive group of members who are selected on a first-come-first-serve basis. This is not a mystery box. All contents will be made known ahead of time. Once the box sells out, it is gone forever.

Walter:  So looking over the first release of BattlBox Black, this box looks amazing. What was the deciding factor on releasing BattlBox Black?

Patrick: Over the years, we always ran across gear that we knew BattlBoxers would love, but the price points always made it impossible. Oftentimes, the cost of these products to us was greater than the $150 that a Pro Plus costs. That’s really how we came up with the idea. If we can’t put these products into the Pro Plus, let’s make a box even bigger than Pro Plus, and that is how BattlBox Black came about.

How BattlBox Black works.

Walter: So it’s not a subscription?

Patrick:  Nope. Each quarter we will release a small batch of these boxes and sell through them.  Once they are gone, we will not ever offer them again. While we originally planned to offer this as a subscription, we ultimately decided the small batch offering was the best route. Renewing someone for the high price point of BattlBox Black simply did not make sense.  Instead, we will give a heads up to the previous purchasers each quarter, giving them first chance to buy again.

Walter: No surprise on what’s in the box?

Patrick: While everyone loves the surprise aspect of the BattlBox subscription, we wanted to do something a little different with BattlBox Black. It’s a large purchase decision so we opted to showcase everything in the box on the BattlBox Black main page, located here, near the bottom: https://www.battlbox.com/black

Contents for the first BattlBox Black.

Walter: Looking at the first release, ‘Blacked Out’, that Benchmade 537 Bailout, this is the first time a Benchmade knife has made its way into a BattlBox, right?

Patrick: YES! Over the years, we always tried to include a Benchmade but we could never make the economics work. With the higher price point of BattlBox Black and in turn higher budget, we can make it a reality. The Benchmade 537 Bailout is an impressive knife! It is a slim and ultralight knife with a tanto blade and Gray Cerakote finish. It’s also made in America which is pretty cool!

Walter: One of the other items in the first box that caught my eye was the Night Vision Monoculars! Are you as excited as I am about this?

Patrick: Absolutely. I had the Bushnell Equinox Z2 Night Vision Monocular for a few months product testing it, and talk about a cool piece of premium gear!  You can record in 1080p and upload the video to any device using their app. It also has video outputs and a micro-USB card slot. This monocular has some great distance on it as well plus a really impressive digital zoom.

Walter: So there are five items in ‘Blacked Out’?

Patrick: Yep, in addition to the Benchmade and Bushnell products, there is also a Casio G-Shock watch, a MecArmy titanium tactical pen and a MecArmy SGN3 3-in-1 multifunctional keychain flashlight included in the ‘Blacked Out’ edition of BattlBox Black.
